The Royal Law

November 18, 2019

When Jesus was asked what was the greatest commandment His reply was, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

James calls "love your neighbor as yourself" the Royal Law. It is the expression of the character and will of God, personified in the person of Jesus Christ.

A beautiful lake filled with life and surrounded by life and beauty can only remain that way if it has a constant in-flow and a constant out-flow. That inward and outward movement of water keeps the water in the lake healthy and filled with life. If, for some reason, there is no out-flow of water from a lake, the water becomes stagnant. That body of water slowly becomes putrid and smelly because the lack of in-flow & out-flow causes unhealthy algae and bacteria to grow. That unhealth leads to death of the beauty in and around.

It is much the same with our lives. In order to live the healthy, beautiful lives God intends for us to live, we must have a constant in-flow & out-flow of the "living water" that only God provides.

The direction we choose can lead to life (light) or death (darkness). James has some great insight into the inner workings of the human heart, mind, & soul when facing these "crossroads." Listen in as we try to learn from the wisdom of James.
